Fund-a-Need Companion Pets

Comfort. Connection. Companionship.

Help Bring Companion Pets to Patients Living with Dementia
Goal: $8,000, 20 pets | Each pet: $400

In a hospital, everything can feel unfamiliar, confusing, and there might be an overwhelming feeling of loneliness – especially for patients living with dementia. But something remarkable happens when you place a companion pet in their arms—a spark of recognition, a sense of purpose, and deep-rooted joy.

These life-like interactive pets—which purr, nuzzle, and respond to touch—are far more than comforting toys. For many patients, they are seen as true companions. They provide something many of us take for granted: connection.

It’s this newfound sense of purpose—maybe they felt like they didn’t have purpose, but now their purpose is to take care of the pet.” – Alison Kokocinski, a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Victoria Hospital.

Why Companion Pets Matter

Since 2018, a small number of these pets have been used at Victoria Hospital to support patients with dementia. The results have been extraordinary. These pets have helped to:

  • Reduce anxiety and responsive behaviors;
  • Help patients reminisce and open up to staff and family;
  • Provide joy, reduce boredom, and give people something to care for; and
  • Improve the work environment for care teams by offering positive redirection. These pets are single-use items— once provided to the patient, they belong to them and will follow them along their (healthcare) journey. That’s what makes them so meaningful: they’re theirs. Even when memory fades, patients often remember their pet’s name, their morning routine together, and stories from their childhood sparked by the pet’s presence.

“They might not remember today or yesterday, but they remember their pet. And they remember the dog they had when they were eight. Those are some of the best memories.”

Your Gift Goes Directly To Care

With no remaining pets to give, and a growing number of patients who could benefit, we’re asking for your help to bring twenty new companion pets to Victoria Hospital.

Each companion pet costs $400. Your donation helps:

  • Bring peace to a frightened patient
  • Provide caregivers with powerful, stress-reducing tools
  • Support families in understanding their loved one’s needs
  • Create moments of joy and dignity in an otherwise clinical space

“If we can do something that allows people to have fun and feel like themselves—and maybe be a part of their own inner life for a while—let’s do it!”
