Thanks to your generosity, Victoria Hospital received 28 new interactive therapy cats and dogs. Each companion pet will be given to patients living with dementia, bringing them comfort and improving their well-being.
Have you ever experienced the unconditional love of a pet? If so, you’ll know that something special happens when they purr, nuzzle, or bark. You feel comfort, connection, and companionship. And, for many, the love of a pet forms a core memory.
The same is true for these life-like companion pets. They help patients feel calm, safe, and comforted by sparking core memories of a childhood pet. This brings them a sense of purpose and connection, something many of us take for granted.
“It’s this newfound sense of purpose. Maybe they felt like they didn’t have purpose, but now their purpose is to take care of the pet.” – Alison Kokocinski, a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Victoria Hospital
It’s all thanks to your philanthropic spirit. You believed in the impact these pets would have on patients. And your belief raised over $10,000 at our summer community events and the 10th Anniversary Miracle Garden Party. Thank you for placing these interactive pets into the arms of patients.
The impact of these companion pets has been immeasurable. A few pets have already been given to patients at Victoria Hospital, with wonderful results. They have helped patients by:
- Reducing agitation, anxiety and confusion
- Sparking memories and encouraging conversations with staff and family
- Bringing joy, easing boredom, and giving people something to care for
- Helping staff by offering a positive way to redirect patients’ attention
“Patients may not always remember today or yesterday, but they remember their pet. And they remember the dog they had when they were eight; those are some of the best memories.” – Alison
Even when short-term memory fades, childhood pets can spark happy memories. Patients often recall their pet’s name, memories of their morning routine together, and stories from their childhood.
Research shows that a furry friend fosters a sense of joy and connection. Your support is making a real difference in the lives of patients, right here in our community.
